Emotional Regulation Impairment Program at the Maywood Campus
Equipping students with strategies to effectively regulate their emotions, improve their social interactions, and enhance their overall well-being.
Our ERI program identifies and assesses students' needs, teaches them self-regulation strategies, and collaborates with parents and staff to create a supportive environment. By providing targeted interventions and support, we are empowering students to develop the skills necessary for academic, social, and emotional success.
About our Maywood Campus ERI Program
Our Emotional Regulation Impairment Program offers individualized instruction tailored to each student’s unique needs. Whether students require individualized attention, small group support, or larger classroom participation, our flexible approach ensures they receive the appropriate level of instruction and guidance in a supportive environment where they can feel safe to learn and grow. Understanding that behavior can be a symptom of deeper emotional challenges, we utilize a multi-tiered approach to intervention.
Our program-wide point system encourages positive behavior, while individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) offer additional support for students requiring it. The core of our program is built on Positive Behavior Supports (PBS). We create a reinforcement-rich environment where punishment and exclusion are not used. Instead, we focus on understanding and changing challenging behaviors through: minimizing attention to problem behavior; extensively reinforcing appropriate behaviors; and teaching and reinforcing replacement behaviors. This approach fosters a positive learning environment where students feel empowered to manage their emotions effectively and achieve their academic and social goals.
ERI Program Student Profile
At the SBJC, we are dedicated to providing a supportive learning environment for every student we serve. We understand that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, and our admission process is designed to ensure that we are the best fit for each student. All admissions applications are reviewed by the building principal and admissions team.
Academic Needs
Students in this profile typically demonstrate academic abilities that are at or near grade-level expectations. However, their ability to consistently apply these skills in a classroom setting can be significantly impacted by their emotional regulation challenges. Students may exhibit academic inconsistencies due to difficulty managing emotions, impulsivity, or distractibility. As a result, their academic performance may fluctuate. In addition to a smaller class size in a specialized school setting, students in our ERI program benefit from explicit instruction in study skills, time management, and organizational strategies to support both their executive functioning and academic success.
Social-Emotional Needs
Students at the Maywood Campus frequently exhibit challenges in social and emotional regulation. These difficulties often manifest in difficulties forming and maintaining peer relationships, controlling impulsive behaviors, and managing emotional responses. Students may require intensive support to develop essential social skills, such as communication, cooperation, and empathy. Additionally, they may benefit from explicit instruction in emotional regulation strategies to enhance their ability to cope with stress and frustration.
